Integrating Social Strategy for SEO Benefits
If you manage or maintain a website, then you know how vital SEO can be in driving up your web traffic. This year saw some big changes to Google’s search algorithms, calling for an updated and more involved approach to SEO. Google now incorporates social media rankings as well as regularly updated, relevant content into its search algorithm. This means that if a website hopes to rank highly in search results, it should incorporate social media efforts as well as new content creation (such as an up to date blog) into its SEO strategy.

Considerable Cost Savings for Businesses With VoIP Networks And Unified Communications
Tech blog DigitalOlympus.com recently released a new study about how businesses can save costs significantly on the telecoms side by switching to VoIP and adopting a unified communications (UC) architecture. Selecting VoIP business phones and integrating VoIP phone system equipment into a platform that supports unified communications is critical for cutting costs and boosting performance when it comes to hosted business communications networks.

407 operator facing $25-m lawsuit
The company that operates the 407 highway has been hit with a $25-million class action lawsuit over its allegedly “callous” toll collection practices.
Hamilton lawyers David Thompson and Matthew Moloci have launched the lawsuit on behalf of people who declared bankruptcy and owed the 407 ETR company outstanding tolls and fees at the time.
The lawsuit alleges that the 407 company has been unlawfully collecting outstanding fees by using measures that violate the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act.
The lawsuit’s statement of claim alleges the 407 ETR company uses the threat of denying a vehicle permit renewal to coerce payments from those people who should be protected under bankruptcy legislation.
How Netflix Is Quietly Shaping the Online Advertising Industry
"How much for an ad on Netflix?" Ever since the video streaming service proved that Americans have an insatiable appetite for premium TV shows and movies, it's a question that Netflix has heard from many inquiring media buyers. The answer, to the chagrin of Madison Avenue, is a resolute no - Netflix doesn't run ads.
Despite the explosive growth of all-you-can-eat premium video services like Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Instant Video, the supply of ads alongside ultra-premium content has struggled to keep up. That means a lot of 30 second commercials all dressed up with nowhere to go; something advertising executives are beginning to notice.

Army Introducing Unified Capabilities during Infrastructure Modernization
The Army is using the Infrastructure Modernization (IMOD) contract vehicle to do the foundational engineering work necessary to expand Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) across its command post and garrison environments. These efforts are setting the stage for the enterprise-wide implementation of Unified Capabilities/Communications by FY 2016.
In last week’s post I provided details on the steps DISA is taking to introduce Unified Capabilities/Communications into the Department of Defense’s IT environment. This week, I turn to the U.S. Army and take a look at how it is contributing to the DoD’s Unified Communications initiative. As DISA’s approach made clear, the Network Services Directorate will provide an approved set of commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) solutions that Defense customers can implement. These solutions will be Internet Protocol (IP) based, interoperable, and compliant with the security standards set by the DoD CIO as part of the baseline for the Joint Information Environment (JIE).
Google Play Allows Enterprise-Hosted App Stores
In a recent statement, Google announced that companies housing their own Android applications can now use the new Private Channel feature of the Play Store in order to internally distribute them to employees.
According to Google Play product manager Ellie Powers, “whether you've built a custom expense reporting app for employees or a conference room finder, the Google Play Private Channel is designed to make your organization's internal apps quick and easy for employees to find. Once your company has loaded these internal apps using the Google Play Developer Console, users just need to log in with their company email address to browse the Private Channel and download apps.”
The Developer Console serves as the system controller, allowing administrators to distinguish between users who have permission to upload the apps to a private channel and those who are allowed to download them. A support article about this feature says that creating dedicated administrative Google accounts is a wise idea to protect access even if a key employee one day leaves the company. There is, however, a required $25 fee for publisher registration and the current functionality is limited to Google Apps for Business, Government, or Education customers only.
This Google Play Private Channel could be the element that sets Android apart in the business realm, as it currently sits in second place behind Apple’s iOS. Good Technology, an enterprise mobility firm, released survey findings earlier this year which reported that, at the time, the iPhone was easily the most popular smartphone for the business market. Since then, Google has made substantial progress in this field, even though the market numbers have not yet noticeably changed.

Samsung promises to fix Exynos kernel exploit “as quickly as possible”
Remember that potentially catastrophic vulnerability discovered last week by a XDA-Developer member? It’s been patched, which closes the exploit for most people, but the majority of users are either unaware of the fix, or unaware the issue exists in the first place.
Samsung has acknowledged the problem, and promises to push an update as soon as possible. This could come in the form of a carrier-independent OTA update, though at this point we’re not sure whether Samsung has the means to do so.
Samsung is aware of the potential security issue related to the Exynos processor and plans to provide a software update to address it as quickly as possible. The issue may arise only when a malicious application is operated on the affected devices; however, this does not affect most devices operating credible and authenticated applications. Samsung will continue to closely monitor the situation until the software fix has been made available to all affected mobile devices.
A large number of Canadian devices are affected by the exploit, including the Bell Galaxy S II i9100 and all carrier versions of the Galaxy Note II. The Rogers and TELUS Galaxy S III, all Galaxy S III variants and the original Galaxy Note are note affected because they run Qualcomm chips. We’ll update you when we know more about Samsung’s plans for pushing out a fix.

Samsung Galaxy Grand smartphone announced
Samsung has officially announced the latest Galaxy branded smartphone, the Galaxy Grand. They were pretty forthcoming in terms of specs, however Samsung was quiet in terms of when the handset would be available for sale, which markets the device would be available in and how much it would cost.
Simply put, we can review the specs for the Galaxy Grand, however we are going to have to reserve any excitement until we hear some more details. That being said, the Galaxy Grand will arrive running Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean with TouchWiz and the latest versions of the Samsung Hubs preinstalled.
Moving over to the hardware side and we have a handset that looks strikingly similar to the Galaxy S3. Not to say that is bad though. The specs include a 5-inch display, dual-core 1.2GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage, a microSD card slot (with support for cards up to 64GB in size), a 2,100 mAh battery, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and HSPA+ 850/1900/2100MHz and EDGE/GPRS 850/900/1800/1900MHz connectivity. Otherwise, the Galaxy Grand will have a 2 megapixel front-facing camera, an 8 megapixel rear-facing camera and come available in a dual-SIM (GT-I9082) and single-SIM (GT-I9080) variety.

Keep Employees Happy With Hosted PBX
Hosted PBX systems aren’t just good for companies that enjoy their cost savings, or customers who enjoy the benefits of reduced phone system downtime, or operations that benefit from all the many features available with hosted PBX that can’t be had with most in-house PBX systems. There are other benefits to hosted PBX as well, which directly affect businesses’ employees and may actually be the most important reason to switch to hosted PBX.
With hosted PBX, rerouting phone calls to employees at their homes or their cell phones is a breeze, and this simple fact eliminates the need for employees to be tied to their office phones. Instead, they can tap into their companies’ phone systems from anywhere in the world, so long as they have a phone with them. And that gives them a degree of freedom that is becoming increasingly important for employees in the 21st century.

Google Chrome omnibox Tip
Do you know that you can search other websites, such as +YouTube, from Chrome’s omnibox?
Chrome automatically saves a list of the search engines you come across while browsing. So, if you visit http://www.youtube.com, Chrome will add the YouTube search engine to your list of search engines. And, from then on, you’ll be able to search YouTube directly from the omnibox by typinghttp://www.youtube.com, pressing space, and adding your search terms. If you want to view, update, or modify your search engines, follow the pathChrome Menu > Settings > Manage search engines. #Chrometip
ProTip: On the Manage search engines page you can also define keywords for websites to save yourself some typing; for instance, typing “yt” could be a shortcut for http://www.youtube.com.

Apple Legend Guy Kawasaki Has Become A Hardcore Android Fan ( Cool )
I was preparing for our Wednesday night ReadWrite Mix event with Guy Kawasaki by reading his latest book,APE: Author, Publisher, Entrepreneur — How to Publish a Book, when I came across something strange — an offhand remark about how “real men use Android.”
This struck me as odd, because Kawasaki is probably best known as a former Apple evangelist, a relentless promoter whose work in the 1980s helped create what’s known today as the cult of Mac.
It’s especially weird because in the world of Apple fanboys there is no greater evil than Google’s Android operating system. The late Steve Jobs vowed to wage “thermonuclear war” against Android, which he considered a ripoff of Apple’s ideas.
Apple’s snobby fanbloggers sneer at Android as an ugly, stupid, low-class knockoff used only by people who have no taste or who can’t afford Apple products.
But guess what? Kawasaki really is a passionate Android fan.

Transporter Provides Your Own Private Off-Cloud Storage for Sharing Files (I want one asap)
Users of free cloud-storage providers, such as Dropbox, Google Drive and Apple iCloud, are often faced with file-size limitations and lack of privacy. What's more, upgrades typically require recurring fees.
One Santa Clara, Calif.-based company is offering an alternative way to share, access and protect files. Called "Transporter," the device stores user data exclusively on your local network and the local networks of other Transporter users you authorize for access, according to the company's Kickstarter page.
"It's completely private, unlike the cloud," the page says. "Most cloud solutions store your files on remote servers that are shared with other customers and have terms of use allowing the provider to access, review, distribute and delete your files at any time."
Transporter features unlimited sharing, remote access from any Internet-connected computer or mobile device, offline access to files and no monthly (or surprise) fees. Check out the video, above, for more.
The company also guarantees 100% privacy because shared data is transferred "directly between Transporters, is never stored online and is always encrypted during transit."
So far, the campaign has raised just over half of its $100,000 goal, with 32 days to go. Would you use Transporter?

Occupy Wall Street campaigners buy-up debt to abolish it
In my late teens I took on debt, some of it was my fault, but some of it was companies taking advantage of my age and the fact I was not educated, after they in debited me, they then proceed to charge intrest rates even the mafia would be ashamed of. 10 years later and I still have not got my self out of debt, the more I learned I realized it was a scam, selling my little debts to debt collectors so they can add on 29% intrest on a student who had nothing.anyways i can write a whole book on debt my real reason for this posting is because I found this article and found it very interesting.
PS I am not ashamed to say I owe money because I feel like I was tricked and used by big companies to get me into debt, if anything the guy who calls my phone 10 times a day only to get the same respons out of me and the person who charge an 18 year old kid 29% intrest should be ashamed.
A group of campaigners linked to the Occupy Wall Street movement is buying-up distressed loans for pennies in the pound and cancelling them to "liberate debtors at random".

Apple and Google are teaming up to bid $500M for Kodak patents
In the name of business, your enemy today might be your friend tomorrow, if you both can work out a mutually beneficial deal. In line with this, Google and Apple — supposedly arch-rivals in the mobile operating system field — are teaming up to secure a big patent portfolio that Kodak is setting up for grabs.
We reported on this news a few months back, in line with Kodak’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing. Back then, Kodak had been hoping to fetch at least $2.6 billion from its patent auction, although it did not get sufficient bids during its first call for proposals. What had been interesting to note was that rival companies were trying to come together in order to bring down the asking price of Kodak.
U.N. summit votes to support Internet eavesdropping
A United Nations summit has adopted confidential recommendations proposed by China that will help network providers target BitTorrent uploaders, detect trading of copyrighted MP3 files, and, critics say, accelerate Internet censorship in repressive nations.
Approval by the U.N.'s International Telecommunications Union came despite objections from Germany, which warned the organization must "not standardize any technical means that would increase the exercise of control over telecommunications content, could be used to empower any censorship of content, or could impede the free flow of information and ideas."
The ITU adopted the confidential Y.2770 standard for deep packet inspection -- only members, not the public, currently have access to the document -- last month during a meeting in Dubai. A related ITU meeting in Dubai, which has drawn sharp criticism from the U.S. government and many Internet companies, began this week.

How VoIP has progressed since its infancy
In today’s business climate, people want the convenience of BYOD (Bring Your Own Device), in which employees use their personal mobile devices to access company resources such as email, file servers and databases. VoIP, or Voice over Internet Protocol, is also a part of the BYOD movement.
“People want their voice to follow their devices,” says Alex Desberg, sales and marketing director at Ohio.net. “To meet this demand, VoIP providers are looking at assimilating voice and video, integrating tablets with phone systems and running different types of voice applications.”
Smart Business spoke with Desberg about how technology has improved VoIP capabilities, how it can help keep a business up and running in the event of a disaster, and the cost savings associated with this phone service.

The Importance of "Big Data"
More and more software applications are moving away from personal computers onto remote servers or into the cloud. Fifteen to twenty years ago one of the big computing considerations was "Hardware vs Software". Today, the consideration is "Bandwidth vs. Application". An internet connection that can support this generation's bandwidth-heavy applications is critical.
The advantges for organizations are that server or cloud-based applications can be accessed by multiple users on an "on-demand" basis. Additionally, centralizing resources is becoming increasingly vital, as it allows for simpler integration between multiple channels of information.

Demonstrating Avaya Radvision Scopia Video Conferencing
Fully Managed Video Conferencing
Video Conferencing is no longer the "wave of the future". It is HERE and NOW. In the past, in order to ensure proper delivery of video conferencing services, extensive infrastructure investments had to be made. This became an obstacle that often made Video Conferencing not cost-effective for many organizations.
With advances in video and mobile technology, Video Conferencing has become a seamless -easy to use- service, available on multiple platforms that many people already own (such as PC, Mac, iPad, etc...).

Samsung Galaxy S4 should hit the stores in April 2013
If the rumors are true, Samsung is looking to go big with its next flagship Android phone, presumably to be the Galaxy S4.
Not only is it rumored that the next batch of galactic goodies will pack a quad-core processor and 13-megapixel camera, as CNET's Scott Webster recently reported, but there's also word it could come with an "unbreakable" screen, according to one analyst quoted by Reuters.

Nova Scotia based cloud provider comes home
A Nova Scotia-based cloud service provider has opened its first Canadian data centre to assure potential corporate customers here personal or sensitive data won’t leave the country for storage offshore.
SimplyCast.com, which calls itself a platform-as-a-service marketing firm for organizations needing to automate email, SMS and social media communications, said Thursday it has opened a Toronto data centre after three years of operating from Michigan.
Co-locating in a Toronto facility is ideal for federal and provincial governments as well as Canadian businesses and institutions looking to keep their data safe and at home, SimplyCast CEO Saeed El-Darahali, said in an interview. "This will open up a new market that we previously could not enter."
Full account billing is done in Canadian currency, he added.
The first two Canadian customers are a university and a municipality, he said.

Cook made the comments in part of an interview taped for NBC's "Rock Center," but aired Thursday morning on "Today" and posted on the network's website.

How to Turn Your iPad into a Laptop for Under $20
It is hard to believe that it has been over a year since I bought my wife her own Apple iPad. For the most part, she has used the tablet like most everyone else does. She sends and receives emails, surfs the Internet, plays games (Words with Friends is her favorite), and in general uses the tablet as a toy. There is nothing wrong with using the Apple iPad as a toy, since I believe that tablets should be fun to use and not weigh us down with work.
SwiftKey Flow
Forget about the whole Android versus iOS battle, when it comes to third party
keyboards, things get really bloody really fast. Some pople prefer the stock keyboard
that Google builds into Android, others swear by Swype, and then there’s SwiftKey.
SwiftKey is easily our favorite, and with their new “Flow Through Space” feature,
we’re even more in love. Here’s how it works: Instead of having to swipe a word, lift
up your finger, swipe another word, and so on and so forth, now all you have
to do is swipe over the spacebar to insert a space. Put another way, you never
have to take your finger off the screen. Confused? Just watch the video below.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus and Android 4.0 Launch Event (57 min long)
Ok Ok I know what you are thinking. I have so meny posts about the Galaxy Nexus
when the Nexus 4 is out, Well I did some research and decided that the N4 is not much
better than the Galaxy Nexus, I mean come on the Galaxy is only like a year old.
Anyways I was using a BB Bold for like the last 3 years and Androids have sure come
along way in that short time, All you have to do is look at the past 12 months
So much has happened so still so much going on.
So I cracked & caved in and got the Galaxy Nexus today. I have had for about 6 hours
and so far i'm impressed, Some time next week I will do my full review
so I guess for the next few weeks you wil see lots of posts about Androids,
& Galaxys on my blog so I hope you enjoy my posts.

The trick to building a multi-billion-dollar public company?
Starting a business isn't easy and it's even harder if you start it outside of Silicon Valley. Why? Because it's harder to get money, find talent, build PR, get lawyers who understand what you are doing, etc.
But Rackspace's chairman, Graham Weston did it (Rackspacehttp://www.google.com/finance?q=NYSE:RAX is now valued about nine billion as a public company). It wasn't all a bed of roses, though, as he gave advice as part of this panel, given in front of London's top startup founders.

SIP Trunking: An Advanced Replacement to PRI
A SIP (or Session Initiation Protocol) Trunk is a voice call routed over an IP network. Unlike traditional telephony, where clusters of physical wires are delivered from the service provider to a business, a SIP trunk replaces these fixed Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) lines with a flexible, feature-rich system with full PSTN connectivity. The popularity of SIP Trunking has been increasing as a powerful, cost-effective replacement to traditional ISDN interfaces, such as PRI (Primary Rate Interface).
Compared to PRIs a SIP Trunking solution, over a T1 connection, can offer 39 channels as opposed to 23. Additionally, unlike PRIs, SIP Trunks can be purchased one at a time. For most businesses, this represents a huge cost savings and decreases the amount of unused call capacity.
SIP Trunking benefits at a glance:
Scalable
Flexible
Centrally Managed
Cost Savings
Easy to Administer
Nexus 4 vs Galaxy Nexus
I gave it much thought, I think I might just go with the Nexus over the Nexus 4.
